Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL)

Even before the U.S. manufacturing facility, DMG MORI had established a strong presence in the Davis area. The company's Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL) is a sprawling R&D center where a team of more than 60 design, engineering and software experts work in concert with customers and peripheral equipment companies to develop groundbreaking machining technologies and software.

Its proximity to the U.S. manufacturing facility offers unprecedented opportunities for collaboration between production and engineering teams, including product improvements and the local manufacture of specialty machine modifications. This synergy gives DMG MORI customers the distinct advantage of fast delivery, easier customization and greater affordability.

"Because the engineers are as close to the machine as possible, there isn't a disconnect between design and production. We also have a dedicated group of engineers at DTL that work on custom machine applications."

- Adam Hansel, CTO of DTL and Secretary of DMG MORI Manufacturing

In the manufacturing industry, research and development is fundamental to success. No machine-tool company puts greater emphasis on, and greater investment in, this belief than DMG MORI. The manifestation of this commitment is our Digital Technology Laboratory (DTL)—a sprawling R&D facility in Davis, California, staffed by a team of more than 80 design, engineering and software experts. Together with customers and peripheral equipment companies, they develop groundbreaking machining technologies, such as auxiliary software, CAD/CAM systems and accuracy-compensation software.

The team uses a powerful cluster computer to run dynamic and thermal analyses to simulate real-life machine-tool and peripheral equipment processes. These sophisticated research capabilities allow us to create high-performance, low-cost solutions to help our customers become more efficient and profitable. The technologies and techniques developed are directly integrated into DMG MORI products—resulting in continuous product improvements and process breakthroughs.

In a traditional programming system, such as CAPS in MAPPS, users must manually enter each geometric entity definition one by one to form a machining contour profile. The DXF Import function provides a solution to that problem by letting users directly import geometric information of entities from digital DXF files.

By inputting letters and setting the letter size, font size, font style, font type and machining conditions on a MAPPS conversational program screen, the tools and cutting conditions are automatically determined. Since text engraving is conversational, there is no need to input coordinates or make macro programs. The NC program can be made easily in a short amount of time.

Advanced Communication Technology, is one of the key automation technologies offered by DTL. The goal is to connect machine tools with various peripheral devices, such as robots, barfeeders, coolant units, gauges, PLCs, tool presetters, vision systems, etc.

DTL is developing the next generation of LPS software. It features robot integration for any type of equipment; the capability to integrate machines with different control systems; production planning and scheduling for optimum resource utilization; a standard, built-in tool-management system; ERP system integration; and much more, taking cell manufacturing and production automation to the next level.

Mori-Post is a fully customizable post processor for CAPS and Mori-AP. As an integral part of the new MAPPS, Mori-Post allows users to perform post processing of their CAPS part programs to generate optimized, edit-free NC code for full machine utilization.

The MAPPS IV Simulation feature was originally developed at DTL, and new features such as Machine Simulation with Collision Detection are also powered by DTL. Recently our team released a PC-based 5-axis capable powerful NC simulation application module as part of the new Manufacturing Suite software. The Manufacturing Suite NC Simulation Module can support simultaneous toolpath verification and collision detection for complex machines like five-axis Milling and Multi-Turret MORI SEIKI Turn-Mill Centers.

DTL work with several CAM software vendors to develop post processors for our machines, providing them with post-processor specifications, requirements and consulting support. This enables our customers to choose the CAM software that meets their specific needs. DTL also provides software vendors with realistic machine models so they can build machine simulation solutions as an added benefit to our customers.

REMOTE MACHINE MONITORING (MTConnect solution, web based)
"You can't manage what you don't measure," is a management adage that is also apt to any manufacturing plant. Our web based remote monitoring solution solves this by empowering everyone on the factory floor, and away,to know the most accurate state of performance of each machine in real-time. This way you can not only monitor the production schedule but also the problems and alarms that cost you money. Since this solution is web based and uses the MTConnect open-standard, it can be used from anywhere on any web enabled device and for any MTConnect compliant machine tools irrespective of the vendor.
